I had to laugh the other day when I read a quote from Seattle Times columnist Nicole Brodeur who wrote “Getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Washington state is as easy as buying a new set of tires.”

Now I agree that in a free society, people should have the right to arm themselves. But come on, are you kidding me! “Getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Washington state is as easy as buying a new set of tires.” That makes no sense at all.

Ms. Brodeur went on to write that residents can obtain a concealed carry permit “without taking a single gun-training class.”

I mean come on, when I was a young boy who wanted to start hunting with his dad; I had to take a hunter’s safety course. It was one of the best courses I ever took. Among other things I learned how to responsibly handle a weapon and it gave me the confidence I needed to enjoy hunting. It shouldn’t be any different for concealed carry training.

You don’t just hand the car keys to a teenager who has never driven before and say “here you go have fun.” I can see it now, 100,000 new drivers a year on the road none of which have had any driver’s training at all. I wouldn’t want to be on the road with them, that’s for sure.

Recently I read a statistic that read… in Florida 919,831 people held permits to carry a concealed weapon, or somewhere around one in every 15 adults in the state has a permit. That is a huge number and I think it’s only going to go up. I can only imagine what our modern society would look like if we had millions running around carrying and having no idea how to properly use it.

I think that any reasonable person would agree that if 919,831 of your neighbors were packing, then you’d want them to have some type of firearms training.

As the owner of The Gun Purse Store and veteran of 31 years in the US military, anytime I was required to take on a new job where safety was an issue, I had to have some specific type of training in order to accomplish the job safely. Those in charge wanted to insure I didn’t injure myself or someone around me. Why should it be any different for concealed carry?

Republican Dennis Baxley, the Ocala House sponsor of the 2005 “stand your ground” law, who vigorously supports concealed weapons, stated the overwhelming majority of permit holders are careful, law-abiding citizens.

Now you know I am someone who believes there are already too many government regulations that we are forced to follow, yet as a reasonable supporter of gun rights I would hope that others who support gun rights would agree that conceal carry training should be required to receive a permit to carry a handgun, because it only makes sense.

Concealed Carry Permit Training should be easy to obtain, yet affordable. As a responsible gun owner I think we would be wise to take the safe road and choose to support smart concealed carry training. Stop by the Gun Purse Store website and give us your opinion.
